With the arrival last week of the sloop Restauration in New York and the year-long celebration of Crossings 200, interest in Norwegian immigration to Utah is high. To better understand this momentous period in history, Liv Marit Haakenstad, who gave a wonderful presentation to our chapter back in February, has been researching and writing a book whose working title is Norwegians in Utah, 1825-1920. This book explores important questions about these immigrants, such as:

  • Who were these people who moved to Utah?

  • What were their backgrounds, such as education, profession, and religion?

  • Where did they come from in Norway?

  • What was their life like once they arrived in Utah?

  • What about those who built Lutheran churches around the Salt Lake Valley? Who were they, and why did they come to Utah?

Researching, writing, and translating a book like this, however, costs significant time and resources. Therefore, Liv Marit has set up a GoFundMe page to help offset the cost of taking time off as a professional genealogist to research and write, upgrading the equipment and software she used to do her work, and pay for editing and translation.
