You may have heard the phrase "A bunad is what makes a Norwegian, Norwegian," but Maren Mecham dove deep into the history, traditions, and modern reinterpretations of this most iconic of Norwegian customs to show that a bunad is not the only way to "wear" one's connection to Norway. From bunader to folkedrakt and festdrakt, Maren provided a well-researched, insightful, and thought-provoking discussion of these iconic and beautiful forms of Norwegian clothing.

Did you know that there have been attempts to make an "American bunad," complete with an embroidered American flag as part of its decoration? That a growing trend is to select your bunad according to personal preference rather than because of a family connection to a particular region in Norway?

To end her presentation, Maren asked the audience to share their thoughts about their own bunad and what it means to them. Responses varied, but all were heartfelt and all could agree with Rick Mathews' statement that "When I put on my bunad, I feel that I am unmistakably Norwegian."

In addition to Maren's presentation, participants were able to see various items related to bunads, including Maren's own handmade bunad from the Tinn region of Telemark; articles of furniture decorated in rosemaling by Kristen Birkeland; and family heirlooms preserved over many generations.
